Addicted to Craftsy: itty-bitty Giraffe Bum

Is anyone else out there finding that Craftsy has become a bit of a... um... habit?

I'm making this critter in daffodil and flamingo pink!

This summer I took Kenneth King's Jean-ius class. Last summer I watched parts of Gertie's Bombshell dress class to learn more about boning and waist stays. And now I'm doing Susan B Anderson's knit giraffe class. I have another knitting class waiting for me, too. And a bunch of Craftsy's free mini-classes waiting to be watched - Know Your Wool, Short Rows, and Modern Buttercream. I didn't really mean for this to happen. But.... mmmmmmmm.... buttercream.

Phin's brother and his wife are expecting a new baby girl in February. Since I already made my SIL a diaper bag for their first child, I decided that it's time to start making stuffed animals, like the ones that were crocheted for me when I was small. I was never a babydoll kind of little girl, but I have a huge menagerie of stuffed animals that have been loved in a very Velveteen Rabbit sort of way.

Chickee, Babar and Bronto - my crochet menagerie

Here's the start of the giraffe. It's knit bum first.

Giraffe bum

Am I alone in thinking this is silly? Phin is getting tired of me chanting "giraffe bum, giraffe bum, he he he" while I knit.

Before I signed up for the giraffe class, I had already bought the knitting book Itty-Bitty Toys, which has the giraffe pattern in it.

Even better, there's a whole section on using up remnant sock yarn to make stuffed animals.

I have lots of remnant sock yarn

And now I'm thinking that when I'm done with the giraffe, I need to start making my remnant yarn into a herd of little elephants.

Elefante from Susan B Anderson's blog

Then they can trample my enemies.

I may need to knit some hippos, too. They could help with the trampling.

Anyway, knitters and sewists, what are your thoughts on Craftsy or other on-line classes? Are you as hooked as I am? Or do you do better with more traditional media - books, live classes, etc? I love live classes, but one of the nice things about Craftsy is that you can go back if you miss something. How do you like to learn new sewing and knitting techniques?

gah! giraffe bum! giraffe bum! I too had/have-somewhere-maybe a much loved crocheted bear. I got myself the Couture Dress class, and I watch a lot of it at my mom's house (moved there to help out with step-dad and hospice for a while). I've found it is a great way to be engaging my sewing-brain when I can't be sewing. I don't have the patience for knitting, and in a way I'm glad- because there's a whole nother stash-problem I don't have to face. I spent part of the afternoon today in WEBS. (yarn.com) just fondling. but that was before I read about giraffe bum! I want to see a finished portrait of said giraffe cuteness. Good Auntie!

Giraffe bum! Nope, it's pretty silly. I think you win.

Also, these are too adorable, I can't stand it! I can't wait to see your heard of elephants.

As for Craftsy, I haven't taken any classes yet (no time lately) but it is something I would consider in the future. People who have taken them seem to be quite pleased, so it is definitely something I am willing to try.

I love Craftsy, the platform is easy to use, well designed and attractive. So far I've just done sewing classes with SK and KK although Peter Reinhart does a bread baking class, I have two of his books and they are really definitive. If they could get Joanne Chang from Flour to do a macaron class I'd be over the moon!

Wow, and I thought that your gaptastic cowl was impressive. You really are quite the knitter. I am going to go and pick up my yarn and needles for the cowl today. Wish me luck! It was awesome to meet you last night!

Kelli, it was great to meet you too! Fingers crossed for your cowl!

I could get on board with a macaron class!

I love giraffes! I have one in my bedroom, and if I could, I'd have the 7 foot tall one from Mastermind Toys!!! I love your giraffe bum, and if I could knit, I'd be making an entire herd of giraffes! And I love your elephants and hippos trampling. Yes! As for Craftsy, I love the Bombshell course. I learned a lot and put into practice more of what I've read about. It was well worth it. And I have signed up for the Couture Dress, but haven't done it yet because, well... do I really have to hand baste all those damn lines? UGH. But I *will* get around to it one of these days.

Love craftsy classes. Took both of Gerties classes - excellent. Took the culture dress with Susan Kalje. Also excellent. Even did the server class - learned some very important things. Then I gifted it along with my old serger. Only class I never finished and didn't like much was the photography class.
I have that book, made the hippo - adorable. Need to make the giraffe

Aren't the stuffies in it so cute!

Clio said...

I don't! Well, at least not yet.... oh dear. That sounds like another hobby in the making, no?

Clio said...

I'm thinking the same thing! "I'll get it done over Christmas".

Isn't the giraffe just the cutest thing! It's going to be hard to give away...

My mom made me a crochet giraffe and I love it. Of course, I was in my 30s. Heh. That elephant is too adorable. Can't wait to see your bright colored giraffe.

I will tell you that giraffe is huge! My daughter made it. She's made a lot of the animals in Itty-Bitty Toys, but she just used the book to teach herself. Both she and I prefer to read instructions vs. watching a video. Having said that, we've never tried a Craftsy class. That might change our minds.
