Sewing while Not Sewing

March through May always seems to be my busy time of year at work.  I'm back from London and on to Toronto. I love travel, but it's always hard to be away from home and the regular ebb and flow of my creative output. Plus jet lag is detrimental to sewing mojo.

So my question is: What do you do when you have a forced separation from your sewing machine?

The three things I am doing during this travel spell are:

Meeting other sewing bloggers for fabric browsing and sewing chat, which is more fun than I could begin to express.

Taking my sewing machine in for maintenance. Honestly, this is so much easier to do while I'm gone and not at home to pine for it.

Knitting.  The whole reason I took up knitting was because it is transportable.

Naturally, I'm also doing a lot of fantasy sewing - planning future projects and stalking patterns and notions on line.

Anyway, what do you do when you've got sewing on the brain but can't actually sew?

  1. Fantasy sewing! I like to do that too. I always have more inspiration than time! Knitting is great for it's portability, so long as you aren't knitting a really bulky sweater, of course.

  2. Well, I imagine it (kind of like Karin) or read a sewing mag. And I definitely knit. Knitting and travel are such a perfect combo. I like to say, you'll never be bored in an airport again.

  3. i've been prepping and putting together a lot of pieces that need handwork, so i can keep myself busy in the next few weeks/months with some travel plans...knitting would definitely be on the list also! welcome back from the UK, we missed you on saturday but were jealous that you were with rachel :-)

  6. On out of town trips, I have sometimes taken Burda magazines and tracing material to trace patterns. I have found most hotels rooms have a table large enough to accommodate tracing. I have a packet that contains my pens, sewing pins, sewing gauge, and paper, and depending on my luggage, my fashion ruler.

  7. That's ambitious! I'd never thought to trace while away.

  8. Thanks! I'll finally be home on Friday. Yeah, I was SO sorry to miss what sounds like the most epic meet up ever with celebrity sewing appearances and all!

  9. Definitely fantasy sewing, and if there's a fabric or sewing shop wherever I am, I try to hit that up as well. I'm going out of town for work next month, and I have to admit I googled local fabric stores even before restaurants.

  10. LOL - Yeah, I forgot that I do a fair bit of that too. I always seem to come home with a few yards of fabric in my suitcase.

  11. Fantasy sewing is something I excel at. If only I could blog about that talent!! Great idea getting the machine serviced whilst you're away... why didn't I think of that?
